THE BRIEF
The clients wanted to transform their South Hobart front yard into a natural-looking garden that fitted comfortably into the surrounding landscape.

The brief called for a relaxed, rustic garden with Australian native planting to attract birds and bees to their doorstep. Keeping maintenance low was also a priority, so the garden needed to suit the site’s conditions and be practical to care for over time.
Fencing and an automatic gate were also needed to help keep wallabies away from the garden, without losing the natural character the clients wanted.

THE CHALLENGE
The site’s challenging climate and soil conditions made plant selection an important part of the landscape design. The planting needed to suit the conditions while supporting the clients’ vision for a garden that welcomed birds and bees.

The clients had a clear sense of how they wanted the garden to feel but were unsure how it should be laid out. Bringing paths, planting, stonework and fencing together into a cohesive front yard required a design that felt organic and flowed naturally.
A key challenge was integrating the practical requirements of access, watering and wallaby protection while maintaining a soft, rustic appearance.

OUR SOLUTION
Our landscape design focused on creating a low-maintenance native front garden that complemented the property’s South Hobart setting.

Earthworks and stonework established the garden’s layout, with locally sourced recycled sandstone used to create the garden path. Locally sourced dolerite and river pebbles added natural texture, while steel edging helped define the garden’s forms.

Australian native plants were selected to attract birds and bees and suit the site’s climate and soil conditions. The planting softened the stonework and built elements, helping the front yard feel connected to the greater landscape.

A contemporary rust-look fence brought warmth and definition to the boundary, with an electric swing gate providing convenient access and helping keep wallabies out. Automated irrigation supported the planting and reduced the need for manual watering.
The finished South Hobart landscaping project combines recycled sandstone, local dolerite and native planting in a natural, flowing front garden. Practical features are integrated throughout, creating a welcoming entrance that is easier to maintain and reflects the character of its surroundings.

WHAT OUR CLIENT SAID
“We’re very happy with our landscaping. Jordan and the team transformed the front of our property with earth works, rock work and native plants. Jordan has a knack for design: we weren’t too sure how it should be laid out, but he put together something that is organic and flows well. To top it off, an excellent watering system, fence and automatic gate to keep the wallabies away. Highly recommended!"
